Democrat St. Clair County prosecutor running for Congress

SWANSEA, Ill. (AP) - Democratic southern Illinois prosecutor Brendan Kelly says he's running for Congress in the state's 12th District.

Kelly told the Belleville News-Democrat on Wednesday (http://bit.ly/2tVyVWc ) that he plans to run for the Democratic nomination to take on Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Mike Bost of Murphysboro in the 2018 election. The St. Clair County state's attorney joins a field of four other formally announced Democratic candidates for the seat.

Kelly has been state's attorney since 2010. Before that he was St. Clair County's circuit clerk and served in the U.S. Navy. The 41-year-old says he's running because he feels southern Illinoisans are hurting and no one in Congress is listening.

Bost won the 12th District seat for the GOP in 2014. Democrats previously held the seat for more than 25 years.
