Evansville police, fire union challenge insurance changes

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police and fire unions in Evansville have asked a judge to block higher health insurance premiums from taking effect for city workers.

A lawsuit filed Friday in Vanderburgh Superior Court by the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Fire Fighters seeks an injunction to prevent the changes from taking effect Jan. 1.

Those changes will increase premiums and other medical expenses for city employees, including police and fire officials.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports the unions' filing alleges a breach of contract for changing union police and fire employees' plans.

Fraternal Order of Police attorney Charlie Berger tells WEHT-TV the changes violate union contracts requiring annual negotiations on wages and health care.

Evansville's city council approved the changes this month as part of Evansville's 2017 budget.
