New YA Historical Novel About Ireland Just in Time for St. Patrick's Day
Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, a new Young Adult historical fiction book about Ireland is now available that is designed to reach 4th thru 8th graders.
Author, Christie Sever, has three objectives for her debut book, "Sound the Warning":
1.) Include many adventures so that children will want to read the book.
2.) Create a world where the culture and history of Ireland in the 18th century come alive.
3.) Include a wee little life lesson. For this book the life lesson is about the importance of family loyalty.
Sever anticipates that this is book one of a series of historical fiction books for 4th-8th graders.
In "Sound the Warning" middle school twins, Joe and Isabel Scout, fight, tease and annoy each other. After one particularly vicious fight, they accidentally discover a way to time travel and they are transported to 18th century Ireland.
Initially mistaken for a banshee and spy, they come to live with an Irish family during the time of the oppressive Penal laws, that attempt to crush Irish culture.
The twins discover the beauty and harshness of life in that time and place, as they climb into a castle, sneak off to a secret school, hide from soldiers, and learn the ancient art of stick-fighting.
As repression and tension grow in the village, Joe and Isabel must work together to help their foster family survive. In the process, they also learn how another family deals with the problems of siblings growing up together.
As much as the twins love their adoptive family, they miss home. They need to work creatively, and together, in order to return to their 21st century American home.
"Sound the Warning" is not only a story about survival in an oppressed country, it is also a story of how family loyalty and a little bit of Irish magic can overcome many problems.
"Sound the Warning" is currently available in Anderson's Bookshop, Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore and on Amazon.com. The Amazon link is as follows: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JPLQRS6?pf_rd_p=c2945051-950f-485c-b4df-15aac5223b10&pf_rd_r=Y1B5H6H75H2NPP00ZSMC
