Elgin grad Perryman garners more honors at UMSL
Former Elgin pitching standout Hannah Perryman recently was named to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association all-Midwest Region first team.
Perryman rounded out her collegiate career going 45-6 this season with 24 shutouts and an NCAA Division II single-season record of 567 strikeouts. She threw 5 no-hitters, including 2 perfect games and posted a career-best ERA of 1.18.
An NFCA Top 10 finalist for Division II player of the year, Perryman, as of earlier this week, leads NCAA Division II in both strikeouts and shutouts and also ranks second in victories and third in strikeouts per 7 innings (11.4) and hits allowed per 7 innings at 3.42.
Earlier this season, Perryman broke the NCAA Division II career records for strikeouts (1,725) and perfect games (9). She graduates as the Division II career record-holder for strikeouts per 7 innings (12.1). Her 15 career no-hitters ranks third all-time. Perryman ranks sixth all-time in NCAA Division II with 128 wins and seventh with 61 career shutouts.
Perryman's sister, Jennah, earned all-Midwest Region second-team honors. Jennah Perryman batted .308 with 57 hits (second on the team), which included 11 home runs and 8 doubles. She also ranked third on the team in RBI with 41 and runs with 34. She committed only 3 errors in the field.
The Perrymans helped UMSL go a program-best 53-9. The Tritons advanced to their four-straight NCAA Division II tournament.
Lyman at Louisville: Former Huntley baseball standout Colin Lyman is making an impact for the nationally-ranked Louisville baseball team.
Lyman, a junior outfielder, was hitting .297 through Thursday for the Cardinals, who are ranked No. 5 in the country in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.
Lyman, a 2015 Cape Cod All-Star starter for the Brewster Whitecaps (where he hit .301 last summer), has played in 46 games (38 starts) and has 35 hits in 118 at-bats. He's also scored 27 runs and has 3 doubles, 3 triples and 26 RBI. Lyman's on-base percentage is .353 and he has 6 stolen bases. In the field, he's been flawless with no errors in 60 total chances.
Louisville has a 39-10 record (16-8 and second in the ACC Atlantic) heading into a weekend series at North Carolina.
Carlini update: West Aurora alum Lauren Carlini, now a senior on the University of Wisconsin women's volleyball team, is one of 19 athletes invited by USA Volleyball to train and compete for a Pan American Cup roster spot. The Pan American Cup takes place starting in late June in the Dominican Republic.
Carlini is a 2-time American Volleyball Coaches Association all-American. She led the Big Ten Conference and ranked second nationally at 11.91 assists per set as a junior. Carlini is a two-time Big Ten Conference setter of the year and a three-time all-Big Ten selection.
Carlini is one of 3 setters invited to the training camp and also is one of 8 players with collegiate eligibility remaining on the training team. The final Pan American Cup competition roster will be named in late June, USA Volleyball said.
Coffey at Minnesota: Batavia product Micah Coffey is hitting .325 for the University of Minnesota baseball team. Coffey has played in 45 games this season (44 starts) and has 54 hits in 166 at-bats to go with 31 runs scored. He also has 9 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs and 35 RBI. The 35 RBI tie him for first on the team and the 6 homers put him in a tie for second for the club lead.
Coffey, a sophomore infielder, also has a .512 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base percentage thanks to 20 walks (second on the team) and 4 hit-by-pitch at-bats. In the field, Coffey has a .964 fielding percentage with 4 errors in 112 total chances.
Last summer Coffey hit .308 in 42 games in helping the Kenosha Kingfish win the Northwoods League title.
Minnesota is 30-15 overall and 12-5 in Big Ten Conference play heading into weekend action.
Troop at Michigan State: Batavia native and Marmion graduate Alex Troop is enjoying another multifaceted season on the Michigan State baseball team.
Troop, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, first baseman and outfielder, is hitting .372 in 12 games this season. He has 16 hits in 43 at-bats and has scored 11 runs. Among those 16 hits are 6 doubles, 1 homer and 13 RBI. He also has a .581 slugging percentage and a .471 on-base percentage. In the field, Troop sports a .978 fielding percentage with 2 errors in 89 total chances.
On the mound, Troop is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 4 appearances. He has 14 strikeouts in 11 innings of work and opponents are hitting .209 against him. Last season, Troop went 4-2 in 13 appearances (7 starts) as a freshman pitcher.
Troop has helped Michigan State to a 32-13 mark through Thursday (11-7 Big Ten Conference).
Martines cited for excellence: St. Charles East graduate Annie Martines recently was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's track and field athlete of the week.
Martines, a senior on the Augustana College women's track team, placed second in the 400 hurdles at Augustana's Meet of Champions with a season-best time of 1:03.40. That time ranked her second in the conference and 16th in NCAA Division III. Additionally, Martines ran the leadoff leg of Augustana's third-place 1,600 relay that clocked in with a season-low time of 4:01.65 (ranked second at the time in the conference).
England at Illinois State: St. Charles North running product Ashley England had a fine outing at the Gibson Invitational held at Indiana State University in April. England, a sophomore distance runner for Illinois State University's women's track and field team, won the 5,000 meter run with a personal-best time of 17:22.42.
Burke honored: Bartlett graduate Tori Burke recently earned a spot on the 2016 all-CCAC softball first team. It was her second first-team selection in a row.
Burke went 22-5 for Stritch with a 1.04 ERA. She struck out 213 and allowed only 148 base runners. She threw 12 shutouts and 23 complete games in 24 starts.
In late April, Burke threw a no-hitter against Judson. She also tossed 5 one-hitters, including a 16-strikeout performance against Robert Morris.
"Tori was one of the best pitchers in the conference," coach Jenny Fuller told the school's website. "She gave us a chance to win every time she was in the circle."
Also at Stritch, Rachel Odolski, a junior outfielder from Bartlett High, hit .296 in 41 games. She had 40 hits in 135 at-bats to go with 25 runs scored. She also registered 5 doubles, 3 triples, 1 homer and 20 RBI as well as 10 stolen bases.
St. Charles North product and South Elgin native Shannon Caliri, a senior pitcher-outfielder, hit .306 in 26 games. She had 11 hits in 36 at-bats and scored 8 runs.
On the mound, Caliri went 8-8 with a 3.86 ERA. She had 80 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings.
Stritch finished the season 30-13 and finished second in the CCAC with a 17-5 mark.
