South Elgin grad Weiss producing at Wright State

South Elgin alum Ryan Weiss is back to form on the mound for the Wright State University baseball team.

Weiss, a 2015 South Elgin graduate who threw a no-hitter for the Storm during his time there, redshirted last season while recovering from a fractured vertebrae in his back.

With his back healed, Weiss got off to a 4-0 start on the hill with a 1.70 ERA. Weiss recorded wins against USC Upstate, Ohio, Valparaiso and Oakland.

An additional highlight was a start in late February against No. 4 South Carolina with 7,106 fans in attendance.

Through Thursday, Weiss had made nine appearances (8 starts) and had logged 1 save. In 47⅔ innings he has allowed 43 hits and struck out 42 against only 8 walks. Opposing batters were hitting only .240 against him.

Wright State is 25-10 overall and atop the Horizon League standings with an 11-1 record. The team also sports a 16-1 record at home.

Richter at Cornerstone: Harvest Christian Academy product Valerie Richter is a member of the Cornerstone University women's track team.

During the indoor portion of the season, Richter was part of the Cornerstone distance medley relay team that took seventh place at the NAIA indoor nationals. The seventh-place finish earned Richter NAIA all-American status.

Matthews at St. Mary's: Recent Marmion graduate Will Matthews has wasted no time getting acclimated to the college baseball game. Matthews, a freshman at St. Mary's University of Minnesota, was hitting .344 through Thursday.

In 25 games, he has 31 hits in 90 at-bats with 16 runs scored. Included in those 31 hits are 8 doubles, 2 triples, 1 homer and 18 RBI. Matthews has a .511 slugging percentage and a .388 on-base percentage. Matthews has 11 multihit games to his credit.

In his first collegiate game against Milwaukee School of Engineering, Matthews had 5 RBI. His lone homer thus far came against Aurora University. St. Mary's was 13-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play through Thursday.

Kisch at Upper Iowa: Burlington Central product Emily Kisch is a pitcher on the Upper Iowa University softball team. Through Thursday, Kisch was leading the team in innings pitched with 115 ⅔. In 24 appearances (18 starts), Kisch is 7-11 with a 3.99 ERA. She has 38 strikeouts to her credit and has not committed an error in the field in 44 chances. In limited plate appearances, Kisch has 1 hit. Upper Iowa was 16-26 overall and 8-12 in conference play through Thursday.

Schramm at Xavier: Hampshire alum Trey Schramm is a pitcher on the Xavier University baseball team. Working mainly out of the bullpen, Schramm is 1-3 with a 5.67 ERA in 14 appearances (1 start). He also has 1 save. In 27 innings of work, he has allowed 31 hits, but has struck out 30 while walking only six. Opposing hitters are batting .282 against him (in 110 at-bats). Schramm had 7 strikeouts against Southern Mississippi and also struck out four in a game against Miami.

Ziemba at MSOE: Rachel Ziemba, a South Elgin graduate, is a sophomore outfielder on the Milwaukee School of Engineering softball team. In 23 games, Ziemba is hitting .297 with 19 hits in 64 at-bats. She has 4 doubles, 2 triples and 7 RBI. Ziemba is the team leader in walks with 19 and because of that has a .458 on-base percentage. She's struck out only six times in those 64 at-bats. MSOE was 19-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play through Thursday.

Markelonis at Parkside: Cary-Grove graduate Sarah Markelonis is a member of the UW-Parkside softball team. In 24 games this season (9 starts) she has 3 hits in 14 at-bats with 6 runs scored. Markelonis has been stellar in the field for Parkside, making only 2 errors in 70 total chances (65 assists) on the infield.

Podschweit at Indianapolis: West Aurora graduate Taylor Podschweit has been a mainstay for the University of Indianapolis softball team this season. Podschweit has started all 46 games she's played in this season and is hitting .252 with 33 hits in 131 at-bats. She has 20 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 19 RBI to go with a .427 slugging percentage.

She's been equally reliable in the field where's she made only 4 errors in 151 chances for a .974 fielding percentage (43 putouts and 104 assists).

Borg at Loyola: Jacobs alum Emily Borg is a member of the Loyola University Chicago softball team where's played in 18 games this season and has 4 hits, including a double. She also has 5 walks and has made no errors in 20 chances in the field (19 putouts). Loyola was 22-19 overall through Thursday.
