Military marker returned to Union soldier's Indiana grave

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A ceremony has been held at a central Indiana cemetery at the grave of a Civil War Union soldier whose military grave marker was recently discovered and returned to his gravesite.

The (Columbus) Republic reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/2t7kLNe ) that a construction supervisor stumbled across it in May at a construction site in Columbus. The inscription on it read, "Nelson Calkins, Company E, 147th Indiana Infantry."

Supervisor Greg Drysdale and others eventually connected it to a Nelson Calkins at an old Columbus cemetery. Calkins died at 87 in 1921; he's buried with his wife.

It's unclear how the marker went missing. Relatives may have moved it to replace it with a traditional gravestone.

It was decided to return the marker. Drysdale was among those who attended a Wednesday ceremony rededicating it.
