Lincolnshire to observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday
The mayor of Lincolnshire has declared the village will observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday.
Mayor Elizabeth J. Brandt signed the proclamation on Tuesday as a commitment to reducing gun violence.
The declaration comes in the wake of recent school shootings across the country.
Residents wishing to join the campaign can wear orange on Friday to raise awareness and to honor the victims of gun violence.
The "Wear Orange campaign" was inspired by the friends of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed by gunfire in Chicago six years ago. Pendleton would have turned 22 this Saturday.
According to the Buffalo Grove chapter of Moms Demand Action, the orange color is symbolic because it's what hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves.
In addition to wearing orange, you can tie orange ribbons to mailboxes, and some local businesses may offer #WearOrange specials from Friday to Sunday.
