Video: Mourners gather in Chicago in tribute to Orlando victims

Sunday's attack in Orlando prompted an outpouring of reflection on the vital roles that clubs have played for many lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people across the U.S.

Across the country, many gay communities served as venues for vigils or commemorations honoring the victims of the Orlando attack in which 49 people were killed and the gunman died in a battle with police.

In Chicago, groups of mourners gathered near a makeshift memorial at Halsted and Roscoe streets Monday night.

Matt Mager from New York visited the Chicago memorial as a show of solidarity with those in Orlando. “It could happen to anybody,” said Mager. “We went to our safe place and many of us were killed. It's hard to see that.”

In Orlando, thousands of mourners held a downtown candlelight vigil in front of the Dr. P. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
