High winds cause power outages across northern Indiana

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Winds gusting as high as 50 mph (80 kph) have caused power outages across northern Indiana and hindered efforts to extinguish a brush fire in Gary.

Indiana power companies reported about 1,000 customers without service in scattered outages Tuesday afternoon.

Gary Fire Department Chief of Operations Mark Jones said firefighters battled a brush fire fueled by high winds Tuesday morning in a marshy area near U.S. 12.

The National Weather Service posted a wind advisory for parts of northern Indiana through early Tuesday evening. It warned the winds could make it difficult to drive high-profile vehicles and send loose objects blowing around.
