Man charged after 5-year-old is shot by 8-year-old

FORD HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a 5-year-old boy.

Cook County sheriff's police said Wednesday they found several guns stuffed under a mattress in the Ford Heights home of Mikaehl Allen. Sheriff's deputies were called to home Monday after the boy was shot with a 9mm gun the victim and his 8-year-old brother were playing with. The boy was reported in critical condition at Comer Children's Hospital.

Authorities say the 21-year-old Allen was not at home at the time of the shooting, and other adults in the home were asleep.

The pistol discharged after the 8-year-old pulled it out from under the mattress, where police also found a shotgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, both loaded. Police say the 21-year-old Allen, the injured boy's uncle, has a valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card.

Allen was charged with child endangerment and allowing a minor access to a firearm.
