Northern Illinois man sentenced for sex abusing relatives

WOODSTOCK, Ill. (AP) - A northern Illinois man has been sent to prison for sexually abusing and assaulting several female relatives.

Edgar Arana Sr. of Lake in the Hills glanced at members of his family Monday as a McHenry County sheriff's deputy led him out of the courtroom to begin a 15-year prison sentence.

The 73-year-old pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and predatory criminal sexual assault in connection with several open cases against him. According to court records, the reported abuse dated as far back as 2008. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss child pornography charges filed in 2017.

Before sentencing, several of Arana's relatives read statements that described him as a "one-time beloved father and grandfather." One victim wrote Arana's abuse made her sometimes want "to scream bad words," and said she "really wants (him) to apologize."
