Work starting soon on new covered bridge near Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Officials expect work to begin in early March on building a wooden covered bridge in southern Indiana's Monroe County.
The bridge will span Beanblossom Creek in a rural area a few miles north of Bloomington, near where the county's last remaining covered bridge was destroyed in a 1976 fire. The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports crews will use materials from the Cedar Ford Bridge that was built in 1885 in central Indiana's Shelby County and dismantled in 1975.
Bloomington-based CLR Construction is the prime contractor on the estimated $1.6 million project.
Federal funds will pay for 80 percent of the project costs, with Monroe County to contribute the rest. Money from the National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program will help pay for the county's share.
