Crews spend much of day trying to repair gas leak in Elgin

A gas leak occurred in an Elgin neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Elgin Fire Department Capt. Dan Wagner said it's unclear exactly what happened, but a gas line ruptured as a result of construction work near the intersection of Oak Street and Elm Street. The leak was reported around 1:40 p.m., and crews were still working to stop it around 8:30 p.m., Wagner said.

Elm and Oak streets were blocked off while crews worked to fix the leak, Wagner said.
