Indianapolis records 1st homicide of 2016 on Monday night

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis recorded its first homicide of 2016 when police found a man shot dead in the hallway of an apartment building.

Police say the man died about 11 p.m. Monday after he was found with at least one gunshot wound. The victim wasn't immediately identified. The Indianapolis Star reports that the first homicide of 2016 happened three days earlier than the first homicide of 2015.

Indianapolis reported 144 criminal homicides last year, which was the deadliest year on record. The previous high was 143 in 1998. Nonfatal shootings were also up.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lt. Richard Riddle says the death isn't the way the department wants to start off the new year "with more violence and another murder."

No suspects were in custody late Monday. Police were investigating.
