Girls soccer: Burrows leads a Vernon Hills victory
Katie Burrows scored twice and added an assist, and Vernon Hills' girls soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over host Glenbrook North in nonconference action Thursday.
Maddie Farag also scored for the Cougars (9-7-2). Ryan Schofield and Becky Bahlmann had assists as well.
"I thought this was one of the best game we have played all spring," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. "We have been playing very well the last few weeks and have started to find our purpose as a team. Everybody is contributing up and down the roster, which bolds well this time of year. We are excited for the second season and we will continue to develop every day. We are very proud of the girls and how they have progressed and continue to battle each day."
Warren 3, Maine South 3: Ellen Szostak, Kayla Malaker and Alliyah Parker scored for Warren (11-8-2) in the nonconference match.
Sangjun Hornewer and Ellen Szostak had assists for the Blue Devils.
Evanston 2, Stevenson 0: Two days after winning the North Suburban Conference championship, Stevenson suffered a loss by shutout in a nonconference match.
Patriots goalie Hannah Petrich stopped 2 breakaways. Evanston scored both of its goals after halftime.
"The girls played well," Stevenson coach Kevin Hefferan said. "Kept a clean sheet for 62 minutes. Made a couple mistakes and Evanston was able to capitalize on them for 2 goals. Evanston is a very good team that keeps you working for 80 minutes."
Lake Zurich 8, McHenry 0: On Wednesday night, Kristin Brousseau's hat trick and assist led the visiting Bears to the nonconference win.
Jasmine Mirabelli and Madeline Blasko added 2 goals apiece, and Becca Kubin had a goal and 2 assists for Lake Zurich (12-4-3). Erin Neeson, Mirabelli and Emily Udelhoven also had assists. Bears goalkeeper Madison Hart made 4 saves in earning the shutout.
Grayslake North 8, Hampshire 0: On Wednesday, the Knights did all of their scoring in the first half of the Fox Valley Fox match.
Corryn Smith and Lauren Davis each had 2 goals and 2 assists for Grayslake North (14-5-3), while Kelley O'Brien scored twice as well. Sydney Paez contributed a goal and an assist, Jordyn Gerdes had a goal, and Morgan Lyon and Iman Hamilton chipped in asssits.
Abby Rice made 3 saves in posting the shutout.
