Macon County sponsors TV, computer recycling

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - Macon County officials are stepping up to take those discarded electronics off your hands.

The (Decatur) Herald and Review reports (http://bit.ly/1RddXmk ) the Macon County Environmental Management Department will sponsor three recycling events this year. The first will be April 2 on the Richland Community College campus.

Unwanted TVs, computers and other electronics were banned from Illinois landfills in 2012. Susan Kretsinger is neighborhood inspections administrator for the city of Decatur. She says available options are dwindling. One major retail outlet has stopped accepting them.

Debra Hughes-Garrett is the environmental management department's director. She says recycling has become more problematic because old TVs have leaded glass and other hazardous materials inside. Prices for recycled materials have dropped.

Other events will be June 18 and Oct. 8.
