Focus our ire on source of the virus

I'm aghast at the number of Daily Herald readers who are plagued with the Trump Derangement Syndrome. Case in point, the submission by Mark Hellner in his letter published on April 8. The writer railed against the supposed inaction of the Trump Administration, even going so far as to allege that the President called the virus "a hoax by the Democrats and the media." Facts do matter.

Let me be unequivocally clear, the president said the Democrats and the media have been trying to use the coronavirus to damage him and politicize the situation as if their actions and mouthpieces were "their new hoax." It was not the COVID-19 virus itself that he was referencing. Furthermore, let me remind Mr. Hellner that the Coronavirus Task Force was established on Jan. 29, on Jan. 31 the president declared a public health emergency and then placed travel restrictions on travelers from China and subsequently Europe. That does not constitute inaction.

Additionally, the letter bemoans Donald Trump's statement that the virus will magically disappear. The Daily Herald has even heralded that "eventually we will all emerge from our homes" and eventually a vaccine will be produced that will protect the world from COVID-19. That's what the president was conveying just like our trusted Daily Herald has stated.

Though this is a political season, it would be wiser during this period of contagion to just nip the constant harping and work to a solution in unison instead of the nitpicking "gotcha" statements for political advantage from armchair pundits.

Our collective ire would be better directed at China where the virus originated and whose leaders acted out their deceit upon the world.
