Judge gives 60-year term to South Bend man in woman's death
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana judge has sentenced a South Bend man to 60 years in prison for killing a woman after having sex with her.
Alma Del Real's family on Friday in court tearfully recounted their anguish over the six weeks that 22-year-old Alma Del Real of South Bend went missing last year. St. Joseph Superior Court Judge John Marnocha sentenced 25-year-old Alberto Cruz to 60 years, more than Indiana's advisory 55 year-sentence for murder. Defense attorneys requested a 45-year sentence. Cruz says he plans an appeal.
An exact cause of death isn't known. Authorities say Cruz killed Del Real after they returned home from a nightclub in April 2015. They say he then put her body in a truck and drove it to a wooded area.
