Pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium remembers Orlando victims

NEW YORK (AP) - A rainbow wreath was placed over home plate at Yankee Stadium by both managers before New York hosted the Colorado Rockies in remembrance of the shooting victims at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Rockies counterpart Walt Weiss took part in the ceremony Tuesday night as the teams gathered along the foul lines.

The names of the 49 victims from earlier this month were shown on the scoreboard and there was a moment of silence. The choir performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" repeated the lyric "O'er the land," blending it to sound like the first two syllables of Orlando.

Girardi, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Billy Bean, Major League Baseball's vice president of social responsibility and inclusion, wore #OrlandoUnited shirts.

Bean, a former big leaguer who is gay, said the visibility might help a kid at the ballpark or watching on TV "to know his heroes are standing against this type of crime."
