Student art gallery opens at Harvest Christian Academy

Harvest Christian Academy opened its new student art gallery Thursday in Elgin.

The gallery showcases the artwork of 37 students from grades two through 12.

When asked about the genesis of the art gallery, HCA Executive Director Marc Abbatacola said, "We have a terrific facility where we showcase the athletic abilities and giftedness of our students. We have musicians and performers who showcase their talents on a small stage every week and multiple times each semester in a large theater.

"But, the quiet artists, the painters and sculptors, didn't have a place to showcase the talents they've been given. I wanted that for them too. We talk a lot about excellence, and that comes out in a variety of disciplines. I wanted these students to know their excellence is valued too."

There are drawings, paintings, clay and sculpture on display, and the plan is for the exhibit to rotate regularly, art teacher Jennifer Serrato said.

The school serves more than 650 students in preschool through 12th grade.

For more information, contact Serrato at jserrato@harvestchristianacademy.org or call (847) 214-3500, ext. 3342.

Rachel Higbee, 15, of Elgin, poses next to her colored pencil drawings Thursday at Harvest Christian Academy, which opened its student art gallery. "I have always loved art since I have been a little kid, and I was able to combine that with my love of nature," Higbee said. Brian Hill/bhill@dailyherald.com
