Media literacy is a waste of school time
Now comes the Daily Herald in an editorial (Facts Matter 2.0, Nov. 12) regarding the Illinois legislature's passage of a requirement that public schools teach "media literacy," whatever that is. The DH lauded its passage and supported its implementation, but now recognizes that in the past two years little action on the mandate has taken place.
Perhaps it is because the legislation was vague to start with and passed with little guidance for implementation, resulting in Illinois being the only state to require a "media literacy" course that will take classroom time away from math and science studies.
The Northern Illinois News Association identified numerous problems and found no answers to these basic questions. Isn't it time to stop beating this dead horse, remove the la and assume that Illinois families, parents and children alike are intelligent enough to deal with "media literacy"?
