Police may keep guns after alleged attempt to stage standoff

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A judge says police may keep guns seized from a man accused of trying to stage a police standoff in southwestern Indiana.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports Evansville police seized ten guns, ammunition and shotgun parts from 67-year-old Kenneth Haynie Jr.

Vanderburgh County Superior Court Judge Robert Pigman on Tuesday granted the department's petition to keep the guns.

Police say they got a tip from Haynie's family Feb. 16 that he was mentally unstable and talked about starting a confrontation with police. The next day, Haynie allegedly called 911 and falsely claimed he was holding a woman hostage.

The state had to prove Haynie might be a risk to himself or others and suffered from mental illness. Court records say Haynie's attorney admitted to the allegations on Haynie's behalf.
