Buffalo Grove Firefighters 'Fill the Boot' for MDA on June 3

Since 1954, the International Association of Firefighters has partnered to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Funds raised benefit MDA research so that someday children and adults who suffer from the disease can have the freedom to walk, talk and even breathe.

Buffalo Grove firefighters in conjunction with BGFD Local 3177 will host their own 'Fill the Boot' fundraiser on Friday, June 3 from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. The first responders will be in their gear with boots in hand to fill with monetary donations at Lake-Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road.

Since 2010, Buffalo Grove firefighters have raised nearly $110,000 for MDA.

In addition to the Fill the Boot event on June 3, firefighters will also be raising money at Buffalo Grove Days (September 1-5) and during the parade on Sunday, September 4.

The fundraising goal for this year's MDA fundraiser is $15,000.

ABOUT MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY AND THE MDA:

Muscular Dystrophy is a group of diseases that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. For those who suffer from it, abnormal genes (mutations) interfere with the production of proteins needed to form healthy muscle. There are many different kinds of Muscular Dystrophy. Symptoms of the most common variety begin in childhood, primarily in boys. Other types do not surface until adulthood.

Some people who have Muscular Dystrophy will eventually lose the ability to walk. Some may have trouble breathing or swallowing. There is no cure for the disease, but medications and therapy can help manage symptoms and slow the course of the disease.

The MDA raises funds for research, education and service provision to individuals and their families who have been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. (credit MDA website).
