Hawthorn Woods' aquatic center won't open

Hawthorn Woods Family Aquatic Center will be closed for the 2020 swim season due to safety concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The village board made the decision in late April at its monthly board meeting, citing a state-imposed stay-at-home order through at least May 30. Once the order is lifted for a gradual phased opening, requirements will need to be in place to ensure public safety that would make it difficult to protect the swimming public, employees, and visitors to the center, according to the village.

The board considered guidelines and recommendations for the pool, locker rooms and pool side cafe that attracts thousands of visitors annually. said Pam Newton, the village's chief operating officer.
