1 dead, 1 missing after boat capsizes near Ohio River dam
SMITHLAND, Ky. (AP) - One man died and search crews were looking for another after a boat capsized near the Smithland Lock and Dam on the Ohio River, Kentucky officials said.
The men, who were from southern Illinois, were fishing from an 18-foot Jon boat near the dam Thursday morning when their vessel overturned, authorities said.
Search crews later found the body of Kenneth Duncan, 60, of West Frankfort, Illinois, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources spokesman Kevin Kelley said. He said crews were continuing to search for a 46-year-old man from Herrin, Illinois.
Witnesses told authorities the river's current began pulling the boat toward the dam and the men unsuccessfully tried to drive away. Kelley said the water battered the boat against the concrete and it capsized, spilling the men into the water and they both went under quickly.
