Police: Teen dies after car was submerged in retention pond
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis area authorities say the 18-year-old is dead after the car he was driving became submerged in an apartment complex retention pond.
Wayne Township Fire Department spokesman Michael Pruitt says in a Sunday statement that the department received calls of a submerged car at Mariner's Village Apartments around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The passengers included a 17-year-old female who was able to escape and swim to shore. She was hospitalized and released.
Witnesses told authorities that the 18-year-old male also escaped but didn't make it to shore. Rescue divers pulled the 18-year-old from the water just before 10:30 p.m. The teen was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Indianapolis police are investigating.
