Wheeling manager to get pay raise

Editor’s note: The article has been updated to correct the year Sfondilis was named village manager and to clarify a reference to where he lives.

Wheeling Village Manager Jon Sfondilis will start the new year with a 3.5% pay raise.

Sfondilis’ base annual salary will increase to $246,804, from roughly $238,458.

The village board approved Sfondilis’ pay bump at its meeting Monday night without public discussion. It’s effective Jan. 1.

A former Wheeling resident who now lives elsewhere in the Northwest suburbs, Sfondilis has worked for the village since 1993 and has been village manager since 2010. His employment contract is reviewed annually.

Before Monday’s meeting, Trustee Mary Krueger praised Sfondilis for keeping board members informed about a variety of issues, the way he negotiates with would-be developers and handling a lot of behind-the-scenes matters.

“(He) does an outstanding job,” Krueger said.

Village President Pat Horcher called Sfondilis’ 3.5% raise “a steal” for the work he does.

“He’s absolutely more than worth it,” Horcher said.

In an email to the Daily Herald, Sfondilis said he’s proud to have earned and retained the confidence of the board.

“Wheeling is my hometown and I am honored to be a part of creating and fulfilling an extraordinary vision for its future,” Sfondilis said.

Wheeling has experienced significant residential and commercial changes during Sfondilis’ tenure. Perhaps none is more noteworthy than the construction and continued operation of the Wheeling Town Center shopping center on Dundee Road and the five-story apartment building there.

The six-story Uptown 500 residential and commercial building across Dundee Road from Wheeling Town Center is another eye-catching development.

Wheeling’s famed Restaurant Row along Milwaukee Avenue has seen several eateries come to town over the last 13 years, too. Recent dining additions along Restaurant Row include District Brew Yards, Yu’s Mandarin and West Town Bakery, all of which filled vacancies.
