Former towing company owner faces charges in alleged scams

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A former owner of a western Indiana towing business has been charged as part of an investigation into the sale of impounded or damaged vehicles.

The Tribune-Star reports that 73-year-old Robert W. Durr was arrested Tuesday and released on bail. Police in Terre Haute say the former owner of Durr's Towing faces 90 charges, including corrupt business influence, auto theft, perjury and forgery.

The Associated Press left a message Wednesday seeking comment from a lawyer for Durr.

The case stems from a 15-month investigation after police say they found "many anomalies" related to the sale of police impounds and vehicles towed from crash scenes. Police say they learned that falsified mechanics liens had been produced with incorrect ownership information.

Durr's towing business was sold in 2016.
