AARP praises ruling that blocked utility rate hikes

AARP Illinois is elated about the recent Illinois Commerce Commission ruling in the Ameren Electric rate case and Peoples Gas emergency filing.

The decisions not only solidify financial relief for Illinois ratepayers, but also underscore the power of collective advocacy – after 14,000 older adults sent their stories to the ICC, pleading to not let big utility companies charge more.

Here is a snippet of AARP Illinois’ response by our State Director Philippe Largent:

“On behalf of our 1.7 million members and all older adults across the state, AARP Illinois commends the ICC for its landmark ruling in the Ameren Electric rate case, striking down an unjustifiable rate increase that would have exacerbated financial pressures felt by 1.3 million Ameren customers, and especially older adults on fixed incomes. The ICC’s decision to lower Ameren Electric’s proposed company profit margin, which will likely save customers tens of millions of dollars, is a testament to its commitment to ensuring fair utility rates and protecting Illinois ratepayers from undue increases on their utility bills.”
