Cake auction to support Relay For Life in Barrington

This year, Barrington will be holding its 19th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life to support the fight for a cancer-free world starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at Barrington High School, 616 W. Main St., in Barrington.

Relay For Life will bring the Barrington community together to honor individuals who have fought against the disease of cancer. Survivors, their families and all those who have been affected by this disease come together to walk, run and camp out around a track to create a united network of support and dedication.

Here are just some of the ways in which participants will be raising funds to support the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Barrington:

Saturday, May 7:

Live Cake Auction: Join Norton USA's fifth annual live cake auction. Located at 400 S Lageschulte St., in Barrington, families and friends are invited to attend this exceptional and fun event. The auction starts promptly at 3 p.m. So if you would like to serve an extraordinary cake at your Mother's Day meal, come and join the fun.

Friday, June 10:

• 'Painting The Town Purple': Artists from the Barrington Cultural Arts Center will have art on display and for auction at Relay For Life of Barrington. Works in a variety of mediums will be offered each with its own "Paint Your World Purple" theme. Artists will also be available to take photos for survivor portraits. Diane Morino of the Barrington Cultural Arts Center is leading this effort and Relay committee members cannot be more pleased to have her and the valuable contributions if its organization.

• Race To Recovery competition: Participants will use decorated cardboard cars and pick up their patient at the patient home and deliver him/her to the treatment center. This is a re-enactment of an actual program called Road To Recovery provided by American Cancer Society. Construction materials provided by Leopardo Construction. Boxes provided by UPS Barrington.

• Silent Auction: Auction with items provided by local restaurants and shops from the Barrington community including downtown Barrington, South Barrington and Deer Park, stays at extraordinary vacation homes and more.

• Free Entertainment: Exceptional local talent from the best of Barrington Performing Arts, Barrington Idol finalists, Bataille Academie of the Dance, and Barrington Children's Choir and a vintage karaoke truck for all participants.

Barrington Relay For Life begins with a Survivor Lap, an inspiring time where survivors are honored by participants in support of their incredible fight. One of the most memorable events during the night is the Luminaria Ceremony, where everyone has the opportunity to light a luminaria and take a moment to honor those who have beat the disease, those who are still fighting, and those who have courageously fought but have lost their lives to cancer.

Funds raised at Relay For Life support programs and services for patients and their families in Barrington. The American Cancer Society's Look Good Feel Better program provides cancer patients with beauty techniques to help them cope and feel good about themselves during radiation and chemotherapy, and other cancer treatments.
