A challenge to successors of Roskam, Hultgren

I am glad that the election is finally over and the signs all over town have for the most part been taken down. Let me say that growing up in Chicago I did not meet my first Republican until I was 15 years old. Let me also say that I did not vote for Donald Trump and that Democrats Jesse White and Danny Davis are two of my closest acquaintances.

Suffice all that to say that I feel that two of Illinois' best congressmen, Peter Roskam and Randy Hultgren, have been defeated by the Blue Wave (Trump/Kavanaugh and Co.). Also, through gerrymandering, after 20 years, I am not in either one of their districts. Most especially Mr. Roskam, who refused the aid of the president, was accused of so many things that he did not do.

There is so much divisiveness between the two parties. Not even one Democrat (save the gentleman from West Virginia) changed his vote on Judge Kavanaugh, while at least a few Republicans waited to consider the outcome of the hearings.

And while negative commercials have always been the most prevalent, this year, many of them did not even name the candidate they were supporting or the office for which they were running. They only lambasted their targeted opponent.

In my personal experience, I have found Mr. Roskam to be a great husband and father, an enigma in today's world, who is still married to his original wife and is what I would consider a moderate conservative (not a Tea Party Republican or a Trump defender) as is Mr. Hultgren. To me these values are far more important than their political party.

I only hope and pray that their successors will be half as good for our state and our country.
