Indianapolis' new leaders outline plan for firs 100 days

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The new mayor and police chief in Indianapolis have outlined a plan for the first 100 days in office with a focus on neighborhood policing and collecting data.

The idea is reduce crime by having beat officers better learn their assigned areas and analyzing data trends.

That's according to an interview Mayor Joe Hogsett and Metropolitan Police Chief Troy Riggs gave to The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1YWTkUj ). They believe the short-term plans will have an impact on crime and hope to set longer term goals in motion for systemic problems.

Indianapolis reported 144 criminal homicides last year, which was the deadliest year on record. The previous high was 143 in 1998. Nonfatal shootings were also up.

Police are also expected to undergo active shooter training, following mass shootings last year.
