No one hurt in South Elgin attic fire
No one was hurt in a house fire Wednesday night in South Elgin.
The blaze was primarily in the attic of an apartment above the garage of a home on the 1000 block of Woodcliff Drive. It was discovered about 6:20 p.m. by a resident who smelled something burning and was extinguished by about 7 p.m., South Elgin firefighters said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were through the roof. Several residents got out safely.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $80,000 to contents of the home and $125,000 to the structure, which was deemed uninhabitable.
The fire burned through the floor of the attic and dropped into a closet, burning some clothes, Assistant Fire Chief Steve Wascher said.
The home is in a rural area of the fire district, so surrounding communities brought in water tenders. Crews remained on the scene to put out smoldering fire and remove burned insulation until about 10:15 p.m.
Fire departments from Bartlett, Elburn, Elgin Pingree Grove, St. Charles, Streamwood and the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District assisted.
