Fire-safety push for Illinois community where fire killed 5

ROCK FALLS, Ill. (AP) - There's a push for fire-safety awareness in a northern Illinois community where five members of a family were killed in a blaze last week.

Sauk Valley Media (http://bit.ly/1NnHSVz) reports volunteers Saturday will distribute information in the Rock Falls neighborhood where the fire occurred that explains how to get free smoke detectors.

Firefighters responding to the Jan. 13 blaze found a husband and wife and three of their children dead on the second floor of their home.

Crews reported hearing a smoke detector on the first floor but not on the second where bedrooms were located.

The victims were 61-year-old Patrick Hopkins, his wife 49-year-old Mary Hopkins and their children, 24-year-old Maggie, 16-year-old Donovan and 13-year-old Katie Jo.

Two surviving children weren't at home at the time of the fire.
