Elgin police: Teen faces felony weapons charges
A teenage boy faces felony charges after Elgin police say he ran away from officers during a traffic stop and tossed a loaded handgun onto a roof Friday night.
Patrol officers pulled over the vehicle near Raymond Street and Bluff City Boulevard. When the vehicle stopped, the 17-year-old got out of the rear passenger seat and fled, police said.
Officers chased the teen on foot and saw him throw an object onto the roof of a structure on the 800 block of Bluff City Boulevard, police said.
Officers took the teen into custody about 9:20 p.m. and, after a search of the roof, found a loaded handgun, police said.
He was charged with three felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer. Police did not release his name because he is a juvenile.
The teen was taken to the Kane County youth home to await a detention hearing.
