Filings show DNC host committee raised over $85M for event

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The host committee for the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia says it raised over $85 million to put on July's event.

The committee revealed the figures in a federal filing Monday. They've so far spent just over $75 million and have about $6 million to pay off.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, the host committee chairman, says all remaining bills will be paid by year's end and they expect to have a surplus.

Some top donors included the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which gave about $2.1 million; the Democratic Governors Association, which gave $2 million; and Comcast Corp., the Philadelphia-based cable and media company that gave $5.6 million, mostly through in-kind contributions.

The host committee for the Republican National Convention released its numbers Sept. 20, showing they raised over $67 million and spent around $63 million.
