Southern Indiana man charged in hit-and-run crash near Salem
SALEM, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana motorist has been charged in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 70-year-old-man.
Indiana State Police detectives acting on a tip arrested 22-year-old Derek A. Deaton of Salem on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death. He was being held Monday in the Washington County Jail in Salem. It wasn't clear whether he has an attorney who might comment on his behalf.
Police say the body of Mitchell Lovins was spotted on State Road 56 northeast of Salem early Sunday. Police say Lovins' minivan had slid off the road and he was walking along the highway when he apparently was struck by another vehicle.
Detectives say Deaton was driving a pickup truck at the time of the crash.
