No injuries reported in Batavia fire Tuesday

No one was injured in a fire in a basement on the 1300 block of Surrey Road in Batavia Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to a single-family residence at 9:22 p.m., and discovered heavy smoke and a fire in the basement, Batavia Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Cwinksi said.

Residents had evacuated the home, he said.

A special alarm was called to bring additional manpower to the scene, he said, and the fire was extinguished a short time later. Firefighters from Geneva, North Aurora, Fermilab, St. Charles, West Chicago and Elburn assisted.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The house was deemed uninhabitable.
