Cubs set opening-night roster; Baez starts season on DL

The Chicago Cubs set their opening-night roster Tuesday. They will carry 13 pitchers and 12 position players when they begin the 2016 regular season next Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

The Cubs placed infielder Javier Baez on the 15-day disabled list because of a bruised left thumb.

Outfielder Matt Szczur and relief pitcher Neil Ramirez, both of whom are out of minor-league options, have made the team, according to reports out of the Cubs' spring training camp in Mesa, Arizona.

Joining Szczur in the outfield are Kyle Schwarber, Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward and Jorge Soler. Schwarber and Soler will share time in left field, and Schwarber is the third catcher behind Miguel Montero and David Ross.

With Baez's injury, Tommy La Stella is the backup infielder. Anthony Rizzo (first base), Ben Zobrist (second), Kris Bryant (third) and Addison Russell (shortstop) are the starters.

The pitching rotation is Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Jason Hammel and Kyle Hendricks.

Joining Ramirez in the bullpen are Hector Rondon (closer), Pedro Strop, Justin Grimm, Adam Warren, Clayton Richard, Trevor Cahill and Travis Wood.

The Cubs released three nonroster invitees to spring training but re-signed them to minor-league deals: pitcher Manny Parra, infielder Munenori Kawasaki and outfielder Shane Victorino.
