2 inmates dead in eastern Indiana jail, 1 hospitalized

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - An eastern Indiana county sheriff has asked state police to investigate after two inmates were found dead in the county jail and a third was hospitalized.

Indiana State Police said that around 12 a.m. Tuesday jail staff in Fayette County found three men unresponsive in a holding cell. They were taken to Fayette Regional Health Hospital in Connersville where two of them were pronounced dead.

State police say investigators believe the two men died from ingesting an illegal substance that possibly was smuggled into the jail. The third inmate also ingested the substance. That inmate was taken to a Richmond hospital and is expected to survive. Causes of death won't be determined until toxicology tests are complete.
