Driver dies in crash after fleeing police in central Indiana

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a young man has died after crashing into a tree during a high-speed police chase in central Indiana.

Madison County authorities say the Wednesday morning crash that killed 20-year-old Randall Lee Moore of Westfield also left his 18-year-old passenger inured.

The sheriff's department says Chesterfield police tried to stop the vehicle that was going more than 100 mph (161 kph) and the driver turned onto a dead-end road. Authorities say Moore then drove around the officer's car and through a ditch to get away.

The Herald Bulletin reports that as the pursuit neared curving roads the officer radioed into dispatch saying he was terminating the chase, and the vehicle Moore was driving soon crashed.

The passenger was hospitalized in fair condition. The pursuit and crash are under investigation.
