Why kids need to be taught empathy

The Glenbard Parent Series: Navigating Healthy Families presents the "Empathy Advantage: The Real/Hidden/Overlooked Secret to Kids' Success" with Michele Borba.

The program begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the auditorium at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn. A welcome reception for freshmen families and all those new to the Glenbard high schools begins at 6:30 p.m.

Borba, psychologist and author of "UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me-World," will share a revolutionary, researched-based plan for reversing the selfie syndrome. Empathy must be taught and nurtured to confront today's self-absorption epidemic. A lack of empathy can hurt students' academic performance and their ability to collaborate, innovate and problem-solve. Audience members will learn how to reclaim face-to-face conversation and better connect with teens' emotional lives in today's plugged-in world.
