Springfield businessman faces health-care fraud charges
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Springfield man has appeared in court on allegations he cheated Medicaid by filing false claims through a company that supplies incontinence products.
The State Journal-Register says (http://bit.ly/2iNQLEu ) 51-year-old Kevin Schaul pleaded not guilty to five counts of health-care fraud on Thursday in Springfield federal court. A conviction on just one count carries a maximum 10-year prison term.
The indictment says Schaul ran Springfield-based Childrite Medical Supply and submitted false claims that defrauded Medicaid out of more than $500,000 over four years. He's accused of spending some of the money on travel and mortgage payments.
His attorney, D. Peter Wise, said Friday that his client would fight the charges and "looked forward to his day in court."
Schaul was released pending trial. The judge set a March 7 trial date.
