2 charged in fatal shooting outside license facility

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - A Cook County judge on Friday denied bail to two men charged in connection with a deadly shooting outside a secretary of state facility in suburban Chicago.

Matthew Givens, 23, of Lansing and Cortez Hudson, 24, of Oak Park are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jawaun Davis, 21, of Chicago.

Bridgeview police said Davis on Wednesday was standing in line outside the driver's license facility when one or more men ran up to him and started shooting. Davis was shot several times and later died in Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Prosecutors told Judge Linzey Jones that Givens and Hudson are members of a street gang who targeted Davis because he belonged to a rival gang.

Prosecutors say an Oak Lawn police officer spotted the getaway car Givens and Hudson were in and followed it. The two tried to carjack another car at gunpoint. However, they were unable to start the electric vehicle, allowing police to catch up with them and place them under arrest.

Givens was formally employed at a Ford Motor Co. plant, said defense attorney Nathaniel Niesen. Hudson was employed as a forklift driver and cook at two restaurants, said defense attorney Michael Clancy.
