Meeting was a lesson in government

Consider the phrase, "actions speak louder than words." Yes, we will see. I attended the Committee of the Whole meeting of the Lake County Forest Preserve District on Aug. 5. I learned and witnessed the process of consensus in action. Civil War Days will return in 2020. History is past, though it is not without bad feelings.

Security was evident throughout the very lengthy meeting. Tensions were high. The meeting room exceeded safe capacity, necessitating relocation to a larger room. The board might do well to review Robert's Rules of Order. Forty-five minutes to make motions, seconds and vote to adjust items on the agenda. There were many in the audience wishing to have the three minutes of time allowed each to speak to the issues. Most comments were connected with prepared well-thought words. some angry, some emotional.

Two speakers, one from the audience and one board member, delivered profanity-laced and remarks that I considered racist. The meeting did not conclude until close to 3 p.m., a lesson in history ended.

Attend the event next year, better yet, contact your elected commissioners to find ways to be involved. Our Dunn Museum and schools offer historical programs. They welcome our ideas and can certainly benefit from our support.
