Baseball: Czeslawski, Prospect blank New Trier

Sophomore starter John Czeslawski tossed a complete game gem for Prospect, allowing just 2 hits while striking out six and walking two as the Knights bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 4-0 victory at New Trier in nonconference baseball Saturday.

Czeslawski threw 60 of his 106 pitches for strikes and came up with first-pitch strikes to 11 of the 24 hitters he faced. It was his first varsity victory after starting the season with a pair of JV wins.

Grant Zellmer went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk for Prospect (9-1), and Ryan Howe and Richie Baszek both had a pair of hits.

Prospect also played an error-free game defensively.

Buffalo Grove 15, Glenbrook South 14 (8 inn.): Chase Marsh's single drove in Leo Rule with the winning run after Buffalo Grove produced a big rally in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game.

The Bison scored 5 runs in the seventh to tie after having trailed the entire game.

Among the hitting heroes for BG (6-5-1) were Marsh (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 walks, double), Joey Pinakidis (4-for-5, 3 runs), John Carpinelli (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Kurt Kelly (2-for-5, double, 5 RBI).

Justin Meyer pitched 3 scoreless relief innings to get the win for Buffalo Grove, which saw its unbeaten streak reach five.

Maine West 6, Wheeling 3: In a game featuring five lead changes, Maine West scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning and hung on for a nonconference win.

Nick Stone drove in Eric outlaw with the decisive run in the seventh.

Joe Swanson had a pair of his for Maine West (4-7), Alex Zimmerman drove in 2 runs and Troy Johnson stole 2 bases.

Winning pitcher Sam Kindle allowed 1 earned run through 5⅔ innings for Maine West, and Matt Willett pitched 1⅓ hitless relief innings.

Brian Maloney and Joey Sineni both drove in a run for Wheeling (6-8).

Fremd 8, Highland Park 5: Charlie Kaye and Jake LaGasse both finished 2-for-4 with a double as Fremd scored 4 runs in the second inning, 3 more in the third and overcame 5 errors to pick up a nonconference win.

Joe Smaga allowed 1 earned run over 6 innings to get the win for Fremd (5-3).

Conant 16, Maine South 10: The visiting Cougars won their third straight, pounding out 16 hits and generating a pair of 6-run innings in a nonconference matchup.

Ryan Roberts finished 4-for-5 with 4 RBI, while Jimmy Brady doubled and drove in 4 runs. Other top producers for Conant (6-7) included Logan Smith (2 doubles), Jimmy McLaughlin (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Jimmy Roberts (2 hits, 2 RBI).

Maine South had 10 hits, but only one was for extra bases.

Burlington Central 9, Barrington 8: The visiting Broncos overcame a 2-run deficit with 3 runs in the top of the seventh - only to see the Rockets score 3 of their own in the bottom half in a nonconference matchup.

Blake Swanson finished 3-for-4 with a double and Jimmy Day went 2-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI for Barrington (10-4).

St. Viator splits with Nazareth: The visiting Lions split a pair of contests in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

In the second game, St. Viator tied it up with a 4-run fourth inning, but Nazareth pushed across a run in the seventh to claim a 5-4 win.

Leadoff man Mike Ragauskis finished 3-for-4 with a pair of steals for St. Viator (10-5), and Dan Sullivan had a double.

Tyler Landoch suffered the loss but pitched well in relief, allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits in 5 innings.

In the first game, Dan Sullivan was the hero. His 2-run homer in the top of the fourth inning finished the scoring as St. Viator held on for a 4-3 victory. Cole Kmet scored on Sullivan's homer and also drove in St. Viator's other 2 runs.

Kevin Napoleon pitched 6 innings, yielding 8 hits and striking out nine, to get the win. Kmet pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Plainfield Central 10, Elk Grove 9: The visiting Grens pounded out 17 hits, but Plainfield Central rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh to snare a nonconference win.

Leadoff man Christian Camacho finished 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI for Elk Grove (6-6-1). No. 2 hitter Joe Lopez finished 3-for-4 with a double, and No. 3 hitter Chuck Fleming went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI.

Mundelein 10, Rolling Meadows 1: Will Michalski tossed a complete game for Mundelein, allowing 2 hits and 9 strikeouts against Meadows (0-9), which had hits from Jack Lincoln and Mark Nolan.

Hinsdale Central 7, Leyden 2: Dominic Fredrickson finished 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in both runs for Leyden (4-8) in West Suburban crossover setback.

Lake Zurich 4, Palatine 2: The host Bears produced just 4 hits but produced a nonconference win as starter Ben Cornelius (6 IP, 8 hits) and reliever Trevor Niedzwiecki (1 IP, 1 hit) limited Palatine's production.

Brendan Walker finished 3-for-3 with a double for Palatine (6-7).
