A 16-year-old Aurora boy has been charged with six counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of obstructing police after authorities said he pitched a handgun during a foot chase with special operations investigators.
Police said the boy was riding in a car driven by an 18-year-old woman around 5:50 p.m. July 14 when she committed two traffic violations on the 900 block of S. Fourth Street. When investigators questioned the pair, they said they smelled cannabis and saw drug paraphernalia in plain view.
When officers ordered the two out of the vehicle, the boy ran but was caught after a short chase. When officers searched his flight path they found a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun in a backyard on the 900 block of Lafayette that had been reported stolen in Elgin.
The boy was taken to the Kane County Youth Home.
