Coal refuse causes fire at West Dundee home

West Dundee firefighters said the disposal of partially extinguished coals started a fire Friday afternoon at a home in the 600 block of South First Street.

Firefighters responded to the home at 4:07 p.m. and saw heavy smoke showing from the outside of the home.

Meanwhile, a neighbor was using a garden hose to put out flames on the side of the attached garage.

Firefighters using a hand line put out the fire in two minutes.

Rutland Dundee, Carpentersville and Elgin fire departments responded along with West Dundee firefighters.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

The fire caused moderate damage to the garage's exterior and some blistering pf paint on the south side of the neighbor's home. Damage is estimated at $20,000.
