Lake County sheriff warns of phone scam
The Lake County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam in which the offender is impersonating an officer over the phone.
The scammer identifies himself as "Sergeant Bennett" and tells his victims there is an active warrant for their arrest. He also gives the victim's name and address to verify himself as an officer, according to a news release. The Lake County Sheriff's Office employs a Sergeant Michael Bennett, which makes victims believe the call is legitimate.
The scammer tells victims to buy gift cards or provide sensitive information - such as social security numbers or banking information - to satisfy the warrant, according to the news release.
Officials urge residents who are contacted by a government agency to first call that government agency to confirm the call is legitimate.
