5 dead, 44 injured in Chicago shootings over holiday weekend

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say five people were killed and 44 were hurt in shootings over the Memorial Day weekend, which has become one of the deadliest times of the year in the city.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi (goo-lee-EHL'-mee) said Tuesday morning that the statistics run from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday. There were 33 shooting incidents during that time. A 15-year-old boy was among the dead. He was killed Sunday on the city's West Side in a shooting that also grazed a 16-year-old girl with a bullet.

The numbers this year are lower than last Memorial Day weekend, when Guglielmi says seven people were killed and 61 injured in 47 shooting incidents. There were 13 people shot to death over the Labor Day weekend last year.
